When is a Maltese considered an adult?

A Maltese reaches adulthood at around 12 months of age. However, it's essential to remember that each dog has a unique maturation pace. During the first year of life, Maltese puppies undergo significant changes, transitioning from adorable puppies to beautiful adult dogs.

During the first few months of life, Maltese puppies grow rapidly and develop their personalities and social skills. Around 12 months, their growth slows down, and they reach their final size and weight.

At approximately 12 months, Bichon Maltese dogs have fully developed their characteristic long and silky coat, which requires proper care to keep it healthy and beautiful. At this stage, they also reach their adult height and weight, which usually ranges between 20-25 cm (8-10 inches) in height at the withers and weighs approximately 1.8-3.2 kg (4-7 pounds).

It's important to note that even though a Bichon Maltese is considered an adult at 12 months, their playful and energetic personality may persist for several more years. This breed is known for being lively and friendly, making them loyal and affectionate companions throughout their lives.

At our CocoMartina breeding center, we will be delighted to provide you with more information about the development of Maltese dogs and answer any additional questions you may have. Our goal is to assist you in understanding and properly caring for your Maltese from puppyhood to adulthood.

Should I get a dog?

Having a dog can be a great satisfaction for all emotional benefits they contribute, however, not everyone is willing to sacrifice time in the necessary care when having a pet to ensure their well-being. Having pets limits the person in charge of their care, and dogs are probably some of the most demanding companion animals. A dog needs to be fed, brushed and walked regularly. one hour a day, at least, every day.

Although it is true that it can be a job added to the responsibilities and chores of daily life, having a dog also means receiving faithful and unconditional love at every moment of the day. Being, for example, the Maltese one of the breeds that require more contact from their caregivers. It is very important to weigh the obligations that having a dog entails when it comes to having it well cared for, but it is also necessary to consider how they fill our houses with light and joy from the first moment they enter them. It is very important to think it through in spite of everything. They are living beings and depend on us.

Animal welfare and love for all animals is our reason for being. Contact with us and find out more.

What is a pedigree certificate?

A pedigree is the document where the genealogy of an animal is recorded. In the case of a dog, this supporting basis certifies that a dog belongs to a specific breed. That is, the pedigree consists of a record of the biological ancestry of the animal.  The document that certifies that a dog has a pedigree is valued very positively, since it is responsible for certifying that the canine meets certain characteristics that qualify it as an animal of "blood purity". Generally, a person who has a dog as a pet does not find many benefits in this type of certificate. However, people who want their dog to participate in a canine morphology or beauty contest may be interested in having their pedigree certificate.

Is a dog's pedigree important?

Beyond the technical aspects or competitions related to dog pedigree, it is important to note that this characteristic is associated with the concept of an "ideal dog". However, this fact of being called an ideal has presented a notable evolution over time. In this regard, reference must be made to the morphology of canine breeds, which has presented a notable exaggeration in certain characteristics of the animal. The most appreciated attributes in each breed tend to be exaggerated, giving rise to future health problems in some animals in the following generations.

Therefore, one can never speak of an ideal pedigree, since the ideals of dogs are always in constant flux. It should be noted that these canons are decided by canine organizations, such as the American Kennel Club, the FCI and the Kennel Club UK. In fact, not all organizations have the same canine morphological ideals, so, in this sense, it is also possible to find an important variation and what some characterize as determinant, may not be known to others.
